Smoking Ban, Yay or Nay?

Practically every newspaper/magazine/billboard/news/current affairs programme will probably have had something on the smoking ban today, so i thought i would add my two cents worth. Personally i don't think the ban is going to have an affect on me, i only know of two people who smoke and both of them are "considerate" enough to smoke outside anyway, I mean it's not as if i go "T' pub, fora pint" (said in a heavily northern accent). While I'm not condoning smoking in any way, surely the point of going to the pub or shisha place is to drink, eat, smoke and be merry, so what is the point of banning it in a place that thrives on people smoking in the first place??. I will still have to suffer having toxic gases blown into my face, while walking in town or wherever, as it doesn't constitute an "enclosed public space" , I still have endure someone around me reeking of fags when i get on the train/bus, seeing as technically they aren't smoking in an "enclosed public space" (but the people around them are still inhaling the lung clogging, cancer causing crap (to put it politely))....... I suppose a positive side is that at least more people are trying to quit, Also i suppose it's healthier for kids and other family members who have to put up with their parent/s smoking indoors......

I'm all for it. Hopefully it means we'll be closer to not being able to smoke in any kind of public space. Something I have noticed though is that whenever you walk past a place which has banned smoking or you're trying to get out of one, you have to walk through a huge group of people doing just that and end up inhaling an evenings worth of smoking in one breath. :s

I'm not sure what you mean about the parents not smoking in front of their kids as they have to go outside though, why would people not smoke in their own homes?

Sorry another thing I've just remembered you talking about is shisha. I used to be all for it (I've only done it twice...) but after reading up on it it's just as bad as smoking and I don't understand why people do it. Theres tons of people who wouldn't touch fags yet they have shisha whether its for social reason or pleasure or whatever (including me until I read about it, never again). Bizarre.

i don't think britain will be totally smoke free ever... i don't think smoking is going to be banned in outdoor spaces...

oh yeh i didn't realise they weren't a public place duurrr!!

I've never smoked shisha and won't anyway, did you read about it in that emel issue?? thats were i read it, at least in fags you know the tobacco content but in sisha you don't, i wouldn't trust a shisha pipe as far as i could throw one.....

A friend actually once said very ominously "don't do shisha it ain't good maaan" before cackling off into the horizon. I wasn't sure what to make of it and so ignored her. I then read the emel article and looked up some stuff online. My friend was right. It is indeed bad maaann.

I have an idea for an alternative to cigarettes which will lead to smoking ceasing to exist. People should inject themselves with nicotine. You know it'll work.

Mishy - shisha? hang you head in shame!

JTM - Don't think it's such a good idea all the smokers will be out in the streets everytime they want to smoke. That's worst because you have more children walking up and down streets then you do in a pub or club where most of the smokinng happens.

Maybe in the winter when it's freezing outside it'll cut down on smokers. Then it won't be a case of but i'm to addicted to quit it'll be it's to damn cold forget it!

Assalaamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Hmmm....why would kids be in a pub? Isn't that like a bar (alcohol, gambling, etc)?

We have smoking bans here in America. You can't smoke inside some restaurants at all. I'm all for that one. Stores also have smoking bans. ....all for that too.

My sister's husband always went outside to smoke when her kids were smaller. (they are non muslims). Also, when I visit my smoking family members, they go outside for the duration of my visit if they want to smoke. It's just their way of trying not to pass on the harm to us or the kids. They do have a concience...Most of them are parents and don't want to harm their kids with smoking, they just don't have the willpower to stop completely. Again, this is non muslim family members.
