300

Went to see 300 the other day, I must say it was a very gruesome film. It had the potential to be a good film but it was a bit of a let down. It had unnecessary nudity which I think was purely used to attract a wider audience (or repel as the case was). It was very gruesome too, with some disturbing scenes of head chopping and general gory violence. The plot/storyline was weak too, so much so in a few cases it was easy to predict what was going to happen next (word for word once!!). But I suppose the plot was compensated for by the graphic battle scenes which were attention grabbing, although a few times it seemed as if the Spartans were merely out in the garden getting rid of weeds rather than killing people. The ending was a kind of “make your own conclusion” we don’t really see/ know whether the Spartans win or the whether the Persians conquer Greece, a bit unsatisfying really… I suppose it makes you realise how gruesome war can be… but that’s it really. Actually yeh…. there is something else that the magic of hindsight has made me realise…..I can’t help thinking that there were certain undertones in the film i.e. the “Persians” consisted of, Black men, Chinese men, Indian men, a Hunchback, Giants, Lesbians and so on so forth whereas the Spartan’s all happened to be Caucasian males with rippling muscles and perfectly formed bodies. Coincident? Me thinks not. However the highlight of the day had to be successfully managing to run all the way up the down escalator!! , I’ve got grazed knees to prove it!! (Hhmmm I bet that was a sight….4 hijabis running up the wrong escalator!)

Having had time to think about 300, its one of those films that in my opinion is better when you've had time to think about it and look into a bit more. The battle (300 Spartans against a bunch of Persians) happened and they were betrayed by a member of their own. Their almost sacrificial act inspired Greece to provide more soldiers and they went on to defeat Persia. However why didn't they mention this? One of those title screens as the films ended would have been sufficient, they hinted at it when Faramir was giving that speech and you saw all those Greeks but you didn't really know what was going on. That said it was based on the novel which was based on the war so you can kinda excuse it. I dunno I'm completely 50/50 about it, I think its one of those love/hate films. I started the post loving it and now I'm like oh no the dialogue was crap (it really was clunky, I really liked some of the narration but again some of that was hit and miss) blah blah so it really is a divider. I wouldn't mind watching it again purely for the fight scenes (amaaaazingly well done) but they should have beefed the plot up.

I know what you mean about drawing parallels with the whole propaganda thing, usually I'd agree but in this case I don't think so. It wasn't intelligent enough to do that, for me it was made to be pure 100% escapism.

Damn. I should have saved this for my own blog which will one day surface. Honest.

are you two some sort of undercover film critics?!
we dont realise just how much 'propoganda' is prevalent in britain though- although you could argue its just based on culture and whats wrong with culture? or maybe its ethnocentric but i think that thats explainable as well...
u should post some psychology stuff on here- its soooo interesting...

Well actually Asma said to me I should do a blog based on film reviews (my dream job would be film critic actually) which I thought was a cool idea! I'll deffo be setting that up AFTER exams. Sirah's just a wordy person, she did well in English at college and her analytical skills have progressed at Uni :) Sirah putting psychology stuff up here is a good idea actually, get onto it woman!

Don't get wrong, i love jumping on the conspiracy/hidden meaning/propaganda bandwagon - I remember looking at some for WWII which is when it was obvious and that was scary (even bugs bunny got in on it!) I just really don't think its the case with this film. Its based on a book which was written in 98 and according to ppl that have read it and seen the film its pretty accurate. Maybe there is some hidden agenda but for this film I just honestly don't believe it.

well in my opinion there was something there in the film whether intentional or not it was there.....i'm "wordy" lol i take that to mean i'm good with words?

As for the psychology stuff i'm off uni for easter so not being exposed to much psychology but when i start revision (which should have been yesterday) i'll put up some "fun facts" for you all

An explanation is what you are after ymiss? hhmmm i'l put it down to the fact that subconciously you like my blog better than yours, but you cant bear to admit it, so you are expressing it through writing on my blog more than you do on your own lol Will that suffice?...
